The solution
KEEN Utility was a challenger in work boots against entrenched brands such as Timberland and Red Wing. The obvious route was to talk tougher, safer or more durable than the incumbents.
Hanson Dodge found a more useful angle: tradespeople were not only defined by the job site. The campaign broke the audience into thousands of job-title contexts and reached them through daily-life signals, not only trade media.
That made the line 'Fits You Better' do double duty. It promised the right boot for the task while signaling that the brand understood the wearer as a person with hobbies, routines and different buying moments.
What it achieved
Workers are more than their trade
Why it worked
The segmentation made DTC media more precise than broad blue-collar imagery.
The platform turned a product attribute, fit, into a wider brand promise.
Always-on digital activation let KEEN keep matching products to changing worker contexts.
What can be applied
In a utilitarian category, precision can come from identity context, not just product specs.
Aftermath
Hanson Dodge says KEEN Utility became the fastest-growing brand in the category after 2017 and that 2019 DTC revenue beat the annual goal by 28%. Effie Worldwide's 2023 U.S. awards release lists KEEN Utility and Hanson Dodge among the first Direct to Consumer Bronze winners.
