Karrot made Korea's second-hand market work by confining trades to your neighborhood
Karrot limits users to a 2–6 km radius, grades them with a 'manner temperature' and pushes face-to-face deals, cutting marketplace fraud.
Karrot (당근마켓)
the move
Karrot (Daangn Market) launched in 2015 as a second-hand goods app in Korea; by mid-2020 it had 8 million users. Its differentiator is geography: users must certify a neighborhood, and trading is confined to a 2–6 km radius, so most deals happen between people who live near each other.
The trust mechanism is layered: mandatory neighborhood certification, a one-on-one chat for every listing, a push toward face-to-face deals (removing the parcel-shipping hole where most fraud happened), and a 'manner temperature' that starts at 36.5 degrees and rises with good ratings and completed trades. Users with low temperatures are visibly flagged, so buyers check their profile, verification count and re-trade rate.
Karrot deliberately kept signup simple — phone number and nickname, no ID or payment-card registration — because direct deals need no payment rails. The same neighborhood layer later spawned community features, local business profiles, jobs and real estate: Karrot added a property category in November 2015 and began expanding licensed-broker listings nationally in 2025.
why it works
- A 2–6 km radius makes fraud costly: scammers can be found by the victim's neighbors.
- Face-to-face payment removes the parcel-shipping hole where most fraud happened.
- Manner temperature converts peer ratings into visible, tradeable reputation.
- Low-friction signup and chat let trust form faster than on ID-heavy marketplaces.
what transfers
Fraud is not solved with more verification — it is solved by shrinking social distance: constrain the market to a walkable radius, then let peer reputation carry the rest.
what came after
Karrot grew from 8 million users in 2020 into Korea's hyperlocal platform, expanding into community news, jobs, payments and property — its real-estate category alone passed 30,000 direct deals in 2024 before the 2025 rollout of registered-broker listings. Rivals copying its neighborhood certification and manner-temperature mechanics only confirmed how distinctive they were.
