ISO 668 won global shipping with one corner fitting and two standard lengths
Standardizing the container's corner fittings and 20'/40' lengths let the same box move by ship, truck and rail worldwide.

the move
Malcolm McLean launched containerized shipping in 1956, but for years lines used different box sizes, so a box could not move across modes.
ISO Technical Committee 104 published ISO 668 (dimensions) and ISO 1161 (corner fittings) to fix 20' and 40' lengths and the corner castings at all eight corners.
Those corner castings are the connector: any crane spreader, truck chassis or rail car with matching twist-locks can pick up any compliant container, so cargo no longer needed re-holstering between ship, rail and road.
Lines that adopted the ISO standard found their boxes interchangeable, and the standard became the de facto world standard for freight.
