ISO/IEC 7810 fixed the credit card's size so the whole industry fit one wallet

The ID-1 format, 85.60 by 53.98 mm and about 0.76 mm thick, became the global card size, so ATMs, readers, wallets, and printers all accept the same rectangle.

Credit cards existed before their size was standard: different issuers used different dimensions, so readers, embossers, and wallets did not fit each other's cards. The industry needed one physical specification everyone could build to.

ISO 7810:1985, 'Identification cards - Physical characteristics,' defined the standard sizes, with ID-1 at 85.60 by 53.98 mm and a nominal thickness of 0.76 mm, based on the original imperial design. It became the format of payment cards, driver's licences, and identity cards worldwide.

The rectangle did the heavy lifting: because the shape was fixed first, later standards for magnetic stripes, chips, and contactless could assume the same card, and every ATM and terminal could be built once for all issuers. The same ID-1 format now covers bank cards, transit cards, and loyalty cards.

For hardware ecosystems, the physical interface is the first standard to fix: once the card's dimensions are shared, every layer above can be added without changing the shape.

The ID-1 format became the world's default card shape; later revisions such as ISO/IEC 7810:2003 kept the same dimensions, and new card technologies still ship in the same rectangle.
