South India's breakfast runs on idli-dosa batter that families traditionally soak, grind and ferment overnight — a daily chore, and loose batter spoils within a day. In 2005, five cousins from Kerala — engineer P.C. Musthafa with Abdul Nazer, Shamsudeen TK, Jafar and Noushad TA — started iD Fresh Food to sell fresh batter as a packaged product instead.

The company made the live product its discipline: idli and dosa batters stayed the flagship, and the range widened into frozen Indian flatbreads, pancake and coffee mixes, and dairy such as curd and paneer. Because the flagship is perishable, distribution ran omnichannel from the start — general trade, modern retail, ecommerce and quick commerce moving the same short-shelf-life pouches through whichever outlet sold out fastest.

The operating model turned profitable in FY24 (net profit ₹1.84 crore against a ₹23.3 crore loss the year before), and FY25 revenue rose 22.3% to ₹688.22 crore with profit before tax of ₹26.7 crore. In January 2026, Apax Partners invested ₹1,300 crore ($144 million) for a 25% stake — valuing the batter business at ₹4,500 crore — while early backers Peak XV, Helion, Premji Invests and TPG NewQuest exited partially.

Treat wet batter as an omnichannel FMCG

The morning batter run is a universal chore of the South — industrialising it sold convenience without changing the recipe.

Short shelf life forced omnichannel discipline: the same pouch had to move through whichever shop sold out fastest today.

Category breadth — flatbreads, mixes, dairy — amortised the chilled supply chain across more SKUs.

A profitability-first arc made the brand fundable on numbers rather than narrative.

Perishables force the best habits: sell through every channel that moves, spread the cold chain across SKUs, and let profitability set the fundraising story.

Apax's ₹1,300 crore investment for a 25% stake valued iD Fresh at ₹4,500 crore in January 2026, earmarked for expansion across product lines and geographies — with FY25's sustained profitability (PBT ₹26.7 crore on ₹688 crore revenue) marking the turn from venture story to FMCG compounder.
