Google's Bolo taught kids to read aloud with an offline AI tutor

Millions of children in India learn to read in crowded classrooms with no one at home to listen to them practice. Reading aloud — the core of fluency — goes unpracticed.

Google's Bolo app, launched in India in March 2019, made speech recognition the teacher. A child reads a story aloud; the app listens, and a friendly reading buddy named Diya corrects gently, praises effort and explains words, in Hindi or English. Everything runs offline from a download under 50MB, with close to 100 built-in stories.

The design removed every barrier to tutoring: no internet needed, no expensive hardware, no judgment. The app works with whatever smartphone a family already has, so the scarce resource — adult reading help — is replaced by a patient machine that never tires.

Results followed the design: in a pilot across about 200 Uttar Pradesh villages, 64% of children improved in reading proficiency within three months, and in the five months after launch more than 800,000 children used Bolo to read over three million stories. The work was shortlisted at D&AD 2019.

Bolo grew beyond Hindi and English, adding Spanish and Portuguese in 2019, and later evolved into Google's Read Along app. Its pilot data — 64% proficiency gains — became a reference for AI-assisted literacy in low-resource settings.
