Engelbart's mouse turned hand motion into a pointer, launching interactive computing

The solution

In the early 1960s computers were batch machines: you submitted cards and came back later for results. Engelbart, at Stanford Research Institute, believed computers could augment human intellect and published that vision in a 1962 report.

His lab built a pointing device whose wheels translated hand motion into screen coordinates, and by 1968 SRI had produced three-button mice for the public debut. On December 9, 1968, at the Fall Joint Computer Conference, Engelbart demonstrated the mouse, word processing, hypertext and shared-screen collaboration live — later called the 'Mother of All Demos'.

SRI's production mouse, serial number 001, now sits in the Computer History Museum. The demo introduced the world to interactive computing and became the benchmark for how entrepreneurs pitch ideas to investors.

What can be applied

Don't make the old tool faster at a task it's bad at — add a new channel matched to the task's geometry, and prove the idea live: a compelling demo transfers belief better than any spec.

Aftermath

The mouse outlived rival pointing schemes from light pens to trackballs, later joined by the touchpad and touchscreen. Engelbart's 1968 demo is still cited as the benchmark for product launches, and the mouse remains the most successful input device in computing history.
