The Dutch fixed cyclists getting hit by car doors by changing which hand opens the door

A safety behavior that depends on someone remembering to do it deliberately — check over your shoulder before opening a car door — fails constantly in practice, because remembering is exactly the kind of effortful, easily-skipped step that habit and hurry override

'Dooring' — a parked car's door opening directly into the path of a passing cyclist — accounts for 10–20% of bicycle crashes in many cities worldwide, and the standard prevention advice is simply an instruction: look before you open your door. Instructions like this fail at scale not because drivers don't understand them, but because checking over your shoulder is an extra, effortful step that competes with the automatic habit of just reaching for the door handle with the hand closest to it and pushing — under normal conditions, with no cyclist visibly present, there is no natural trigger reminding a driver to look.
Facing high road casualty rates in the 1970s, the Netherlands built driver training around a physical mechanism instead of a memorized instruction: opening the car door with the hand farther from it — the right hand for a left-hand-drive car — rather than the near hand. That single substitution forces the body to twist across the torso to reach the handle, which naturally rotates the head and shoulders toward the rear window and side mirror, producing the safety check as an unavoidable physical side effect of the motion rather than as a separate step the driver has to remember to add.
what everyone would do
Teach and remind drivers to look before opening the door — the standard road-safety instruction. It fails at scale because checking over your shoulder is an extra, effortful step competing with the automatic habit of reaching for the door with the nearest hand, and there's no natural trigger reminding a driver to look when no cyclist happens to be visible in the moment.
what they saw
Dutch driver-training designers saw the failure wasn't a knowledge gap, drivers already understood the instruction — it was that 'remember to check' is exactly the kind of effortful, skippable step habit overrides. The fix wasn't reinforcing the instruction harder, it was redesigning the physical motion of opening the door itself so the checking behavior became an unavoidable mechanical side effect of the motion rather than a separate step layered on top of it.
the move
Rather than trying to make drivers remember to look, the 'Dutch Reach' redesigned the door-opening motion itself so the checking behavior is mechanically inseparable from opening the door at all — a driver physically cannot use the technique without their body turning toward the direction a cyclist would be approaching from, removing the failure mode of forgetting entirely.
why it works
Opening the door with the far hand instead of the near hand forces the body to twist across the torso to reach the handle, and that twisting motion naturally rotates the head and shoulders toward the rear window and side mirror — exactly the direction a cyclist would be approaching from. Because the check happens as a direct physical consequence of the door-opening motion itself, it can't be skipped without also failing to open the door the trained way, eliminating the failure mode of simply forgetting to look. Looking is no longer a discretionary add-on competing with habit, it's mechanically bound to the only way the technique works at all.
the payoff
The technique has been standard in Dutch driver training and licensing exams since the 1970s, and the Netherlands has some of the lowest cyclist casualty rates in the world; the method has since been formally added to driver's manuals and licensing materials in Massachusetts (2017), multiple Australian states including Victoria (2012), Washington State (2019, in seven language editions), and other jurisdictions specifically citing dooring-prevention as the rationale.
where it breaks
The approach only works when a genuinely different physical motion actually produces the desired check as an inherent side effect — not every safety behavior has an equivalent substitution available, since some checks (verifying a digital reading, confirming an unrelated setting) have no analogous 'twist your body and you'll see it' mechanism to redesign into. It also depends on the new motion being trained and reinforced widely enough to become habitual itself; a technique taught once but not reinforced in licensing tests or repeated practice can fail to displace an ingrained old habit, especially among drivers who learned the near-hand motion long before. And it requires the redesigned motion to still reliably perform its original function — a substitution that makes opening the door itself harder or less reliable would trade one failure mode for another rather than genuinely fixing anything.
what came after
The Dutch Reach is a standard case study in behavioral safety design and 'nudge' literature for converting a rule that depends on memory into a physical mechanism that enforces the desired behavior automatically, and continues to spread through driver-education systems internationally as bicycle commuting increases and dooring incident data becomes more visible to transportation regulators.
