Dramamine celebrated the air-sick bag it made obsolete as a tribute, not a joke

The motion-sickness brand honored the airline barf bag with a documentary, a museum and an upcycled merch line — including a puffer jacket made from them.

Dramamine (Prestige Consumer Healthcare)

the move

Dramamine's strategic problem was category, not attention: people thought of it only as a motion-sickness pill, but the growth lay in the broader nausea market, and indifference — not dislike — was the hurdle.

Instead of a medical spot, FCB Chicago paid tribute to the very symptom-catcher the pill had made unnecessary: the barf bag. A short documentary traced its unlikely history and elevating it to a design icon.

The campaign extended the joke into a pop-up museum in New York, a one-of-one puffer jacket printed with barf-bag patterns and an e-commerce shop selling repurposed sick bags, each bundled with a sample box of Dramamine medicines.

Everything stayed light and cultural, so the brand's larger claim — that it handles more kinds of nausea — was absorbed through comedy and culture rather than asserted in a medical ad.

why it works

  • It reframed an OTC pitch as culture, so the brand owned the very object it had outdated.
  • Humor lowered the social guardrails around a queasy subject, letting the claim land as a joke not a warning.
  • The merchandise and documentary generated earned media instead of paid impressions.
  • It let the product itself be the proof — if the cure works, the symptom's tool becomes a relic worth a museum.

what transfers

When the challenge is indifference, not rejection, don't push a harder pitch. Latch onto something people already find funny or cultural and let the product's existence make the point.

what came after

It won the Health & Wellness Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2024. The agency noted the challenge was indifference, and the category-expansion idea — positioning the brand against nausea generally while the campaign staged a funeral for the sick bag — became a reference for culture-led health marketing.
