DOCSIS turned rival cable systems into one standard operators could buy

the move

In the mid-1990s cable companies wanted to sell internet access over their TV networks, but every vendor's cable modem spoke a different language, so each operator risked locking itself to one supplier. The industry needed one way for a modem to talk to a headend.

CableLabs, the cooperative research lab owned by the cable operators, developed DOCSIS with contributing companies and released version 1.0 in March 1997. The spec defined how modems and cable systems communicate, plus a certification program so operators could buy any modem that passed.

Because the standard was shared, modem prices fell and every operator could deploy broadband on the same equipment. The ITU-T later approved DOCSIS versions as international standards, and cable broadband spread across the world as one interoperable system.

DOCSIS evolved through 3.0, 3.1 and 4.0, keeping cable networks competitive with fiber by multiplying speeds over the same coax. It remains the foundation of cable broadband worldwide and a template for industry standard-setting.
