DMX512 put 512 lighting channels on one wire and became entertainment's lighting standard

the move
By the 1980s, theatre lighting consoles and dimmers each spoke their maker's own proprietary control protocol, so equipment from different manufacturers could not be mixed in one rig. As shows grew more complex, cross-manufacturer compatibility became critical.
In 1986 the USITT Engineering Commission sponsored a session at its Annual Conference in Oakland; from it came USITT DMX512 — 'Digital Data Transmission Standard for Dimmers and Controllers'. The physical layer reused EIA-485; the protocol was based on Colortran's D192, and the standard was deliberately the lowest common denominator.
The design traded completeness for universality: 512 channels of 8-bit data in one repeating frame on a two-wire differential bus at 250 kbit/s, using the same XLR cables theatres already had for microphones. A console needs no knowledge of the dimmer's maker — it just writes slot values, and every fixture listens for its slot.
The expectation was that proprietary protocols would remain the norm and DMX would be the fallback when systems had to mix. Instead it became the primary protocol: revised in 1990, moved to ESTA's standards program in 1998, and approved as ANSI E1.11-2004 (DMX512-A) in November 2004 with backward compatibility preserved.
why it works
- One 512-channel frame over a common two-wire bus replaced racks of proprietary multi-core cabling.
- Reusing EIA-485 and XLR connectors meant cheap, familiar hardware from day one.
- Being the lowest common denominator lowered every vendor's cost of compliance below the cost of staying proprietary.
- Backward-compatible revisions meant installed equipment never became obsolete, locking in the installed base.

When every vendor has a proprietary protocol, standardize on the lowest common denominator — intentionally simple, openly specified, and cheap enough that nobody wants to keep their own.
what came after
DMX512 became the entertainment industry's primary lighting-control protocol, extended beyond dimmers to intelligent fixtures, fog machines and lasers, and into architectural lighting. ANSI E1.11-2004 formalized it as DMX512-A, and later standards such as RDM were designed to coexist with it rather than replace it.
