In 1993, 23-year-old Sunil Vachani borrowed ₹15 lakh from his father, rented a 10,000 sq ft plot in Noida with 15 employees, and started assembling CRT televisions — for other companies. Outsourced manufacturing was alien in India, where 'manufacturing is sacred, it has to be in-house'. His first client, Lucky-Goldstar (LG), paid a desperate $1.5 a set. When the 1997 export business collapsed, co-runner Atul Lall drew the real lesson: 'our core wasn't TV, it was electronics manufacturing'.

The defining choice came in the early 2000s, when Dixon launched its own consumer brand — then killed it after two and a half years. 'Decisions of what not to do are far more important,' Vachani said; never competing with customers became 'cast in stone'. Instead Dixon climbed a category ladder with the same muscle: lighting in 2008, Godrej washing machines, Xiaomi LED TVs (2018), Samsung TV lines (2020), phones, a Vivo JV (2024). Frugality funded the climb: profitable from its first quarter, ₹10,700-crore revenue by FY22 on net debt-equity of 0.1.

Policy then did the rest. Make in India and the PLI scheme turned India's largest homegrown EMS — 17 plants serving Samsung, Xiaomi, Panasonic and Philips under one roof — into the sector's default champion: FY26 saw 33 million smartphones made, roughly 4 million of them exported, with mobiles now Dixon's largest export category. For FY27 management guides revenue past ₹56,000 crore, up 15-17%, on exports (Ismartu, Motorola), telecom gear, IT hardware and a ₹1,100-crore display plant for backward integration — and the new ₹6,250-crore mobile PLI 2.0 again finds Dixon pre-built.

Make for every brand; never become one

Serving every brand captures the industry's growth without betting on which phone or TV wins.

Each new category reused the same core skill — final assembly plus vendor development — so expansion cost less than invention.

Refusing to compete with customers made Dixon the safe factory for brands that are rivals to each other.

Capital thinness let policy windows (M-SIPS, PLI, PLI 2.0) be seized without dilution or debt stress.

Selling shovels beats digging: a supplier to every brand rides all clients' growth without betting on a winner. The price is permanent — never compete with your customers.

In December 2025 Vachani was named NDTV's Business Leader of the Year as Dixon powered India's manufacturing shift from importer to exporter. Mutual funds piled in; the Vivo JV moved phones into Dixon's highest gear; the display plant begins trials as the company pushes backend integration. The next test is upstream: Dixon's history is in final assembly, and components are a different — more capital-hungry — ladder rung.
