DisplayPort won the PC display slot with a packetized interface no vendor owns

the move

DVI and HDMI carried a separate clock and were bulky in thin laptops, were hard to scale and often licensed.

VESA released DisplayPort 1.0 in May 2006 as a DVI successor built on a packetized micro-packet architecture.

By embedding the clock in the data stream and packing data into micro-packets, it scaled from 1 to 4 lanes and handled high resolutions and refresh rates.

Because it was royalty-friendly and slim, it became the laptop panel and monitor interface, and USB-C's DisplayPort alternate mode spread it further.
