Delta Air Lines flew over 2,500 domestic flight legs every day with about 450 aircraft drawn from 10 different fleets. Fleet assignment — matching aircraft to flights so seats fill with paying passengers — was one of the largest and most difficult problems in the airline industry.

By the early 1990s, advances in mathematical-programming algorithms and computer hardware made the full problem solvable for the first time. Delta built Coldstart and became the first airline to solve fleet assignment to completion rather than decomposing it into manageable pieces.

The payoff was measured: Delta expected Coldstart to save $300 million over the next three years. The system and its expected returns were documented in Interfaces, INFORMS' applied journal, in 1994.
