the move
Founded in 1992 with four employees by pharmacist Lee Kyung-soo, Cosmax began as a tiny subcontractor with technology licensed from a Japanese ODM. The 1997 IMF crisis became its turning point: while competitors shrank, it invested aggressively in facilities and tightened partnerships with customers in trouble.
Its model is original design manufacturing — Cosmax develops and produces products for other brands rather than selling under its own name. That includes flexible small-volume production and product-planning-to-marketing support, which let cash-poor startups like Rom&nd, Beauty of Joseon and TirTir launch without building factories.
Cosmax spotted China early, opened its first overseas plant in Guangzhou in 2002, and took the global #1 ODM position in 2015. By 2024 its revenue passed ₩3 trillion, it had collaborated with about 4,500 brands, and its exports accounted for roughly 26% of Korea's cosmetics exports.
