the move

China's natural gas consumption nearly doubled in five years, and CNPC's pipeline network, the country's largest, was planned annually by hand in spreadsheets. As the network grew, the manual method accumulated large errors, wasting resources and inflating construction plans.

CNPC partnered with researchers at UC Berkeley and Tsinghua University to build software that optimizes the national gas pipeline network, covering both operations and expansion design.

Implemented from the end of 2014, the system raised CNPC's profits by $530 million over 2015–2017 and reduced planned construction budgets by more than $20 billion for the next five years by making better use of existing capacity.

INFORMS credited the project with roughly $330 million in direct savings and said the added efficiency let CNPC delay further pipeline expansions, saving billions more.
