Cerveza Poker turned loyalty points into a retirement pension

Beer brand Cerveza Poker let Colombia's shopkeepers convert unclaimed loyalty points into real pension savings, with a state top-up.

the move

Cerveza Poker is sold through thousands of small shopkeepers across Colombia, who earned BEES loyalty points on the sales they made but rarely redeemed them. Meanwhile many of those same people had no formal retirement savings.

With Media.Monks Colombia and in partnership with the state pension fund Colpensiones, the brand launched the Beer Retirement Account: points accumulated on beer sales could be converted into money deposited directly into a pension account, with an additional contribution from the government.

The mechanism solved two problems at once. For the shopkeepers it created real retirement savings out of points that were otherwise idle; for the brand it turned a loyalty programme into something with lasting value for the people who distribute its product.

It also gave the retailer a financial product rather than a discount, so the brand's relationship deepened instead of being bought with price.

why it works

  • Shopkeepers held loyalty points that went unused and had no retirement savings.
  • Converting points into pension deposits made the points worth far more than a discount.
  • A government top-up amplified the value and made the programme feel official.
  • The brand earned loyalty by solving a real financial gap rather than cutting price.

what transfers

Find a resource your customer already holds but ignores, then turn it into the thing they lack; convert idle loyalty into genuine security.

what came after

More than 10,000 shopkeepers began saving through the platform within the first four months, and Cerveza Poker's order volume grew 12.5% nationally. Longer-term reporting put participation well beyond 30,000 shopkeepers redeeming over 800 million BEES points equivalent to more than a million dollars in pension savings. The campaign was shortlisted in the Innovation category at Cannes Lions 2025.
