Apple showed a woman's data being auctioned in real time

In the Data Auction film, Ellie's every move is sold to the highest bidder — a visceral ad for iPhone privacy controls.

Apple

the move

Most people know their data is collected but cannot picture the trade. Apple's Data Auction, created by TBWA\Media Arts Lab, turned that abstraction into a room.

In the film, a young woman named Ellie shops for records while, behind a glass wall, her personal data is auctioned to bidders in real time — her habits, her tastes, her movements, packaged and sold by strangers who know more about her than she does. The auctioneer's patter makes the scale absurd and chilling at once.

The ad's turn is quiet: on iPhone, a tap stops the auction and hands control back to Ellie. The campaign reframed privacy as an active choice against an explicit adversary — data brokers — rather than a vague promise of protection.

Data Auction was part of Apple's broader privacy platform, shortlisted at D&AD 2023 and widely covered as one of the clearest mainstream explanations of the data-resale economy.

why it works

  • An auction makes the invisible data trade concrete and dramatic
  • The glass wall turns every viewer into a witness of their own exposure
  • The one-tap resolution makes privacy feel actionable, not abstract
  • Naming data brokers gave the campaign a villain and a story arc
the payoffMake the invisible auction visibleclever

what transfers

To sell an invisible benefit, make the harm visible: dramatize what the customer cannot see (their data being traded), and the product's quiet feature becomes the resolution of a story, not a spec.

what came after

Data Auction ran as part of Apple's 'Privacy on iPhone' platform in 2022 and was shortlisted at D&AD 2023. It became a reference point for explaining data resale to general audiences and drew attention to the scale of the personal-data industry.
