Since Lebanon gained independence in 1943, no government has managed or been willing to publish a unified, truthful account of the country's modern history — the sectarian and political fractures make an agreed narrative impossible, so school curricula stay sterilised and generations are taught nothing but fragments. The gap is a national memory hole that no state institution is positioned to close.
The conventional response is to campaign for curriculum reform or publish a corrective history book that competes with the state's silence. Both depend on winning a political fight over whose version of the past is taught, or on starting from scratch to write something authoritative the state itself refused to.
On Independence Day 2025 AnNahar launched the 'Untaught History Edition': journalists and historians worked through 82 years of AnNahar's own front-page archive, used those published pages to reconstruct the missing chapters of Lebanese history, and printed the result as a special newspaper edition. The daily paper itself became the history textbook the state never wrote, distributed into classrooms.
AnNahar rebuilt the missing history from its own 82-year front-page archive and printed it as a special edition, making the paper the textbook the state never wrote.
The archive held the primary source, so no permission was needed.
Each claim carried its dated front page as evidence, giving authority.
The newspaper's existing trust and distribution made the textbook credible.
The state's silence became the reason the newspaper was the only institution positioned to write it.
When the gatekeeper is blocked, don't fight the politics—rebuild the missing record from your own archive and publish through your own channel.
Ranked 4th globally in WARC's effectiveness index, won ADFEST 2026 Grand Prix; the 40% subscription lift is the campaign's own report The edition became part of a six-year 'Active Journalism' platform that keeps turning AnNahar's newsroom assets into public instruments, and it put the untaught history back into Lebanon's classrooms — a mechanism sustained and independently re-validated across multiple years.
