For a full flight, boarding is one of the longest ground tasks an airline controls, and slow turns waste aircraft time and money. America West's traditional back-to-front boarding packed the aisle with passengers who had to squeeze past seated travelers.

A team of Arizona State University researchers and America West personnel studied the aisle with field observations, analytical models, and simulation. They designed reverse-pyramid boarding: passengers keep seat assignments but board in groups ordered to minimize expected interference.

America West implemented the strategy in September 2003. For full and nearly full flights, average passenger boarding time fell by over two minutes, about 20 percent, a significant improvement over pure back-to-front and outside-inside strategies.
