Through the 1920s American seed companies routinely marketed new flower and vegetable varieties as breakthroughs, but a gardener had no way to verify a breeder's claim before committing a growing season and a plot of land to a variety that might perform no better than what was already on the shelf.
W. Ray Hastings, president of the Southern Seedsmen's Association, proposed a solution the industry itself would fund but not control: a nonprofit, All-America Selections, running new varieties through a national network of trial gardens judged by horticulturists with no stake in whose seed won.
Breeders submit unreleased varieties without fanfare to trial grounds spread across North America's different climates, where impartial judges grow them side by side against existing comparison varieties and score them on real, measured garden performance before any seal of approval is granted or withheld.
Built a disinterested trial network across climates, where the plant's own measured performance, not the breeder's claim, earns the seal.
Independent judges with no stake remove seller bias.
Side-by-side growth against a standard yields measured performance.
A network across climates reflects real garden conditions.
A seal earned by beating the standard gives buyers a trustworthy signal.
When sellers' claims are unverifiable, create a shared, disinterested test that measures the actual product against a standard, and let the seal, not the seller, carry the claim.
The first AAS winners were named in 1933; the seal, earned only by beating the market standard, is still awarded yearly, nine decades on. All-America Selections has run continuously for over ninety years and its seal still gates which new varieties nurseries can credibly claim are actually better, built entirely on the mechanism of anonymous, real-world trial performance replacing a breeder's own marketing claim.
