Aboriginal Australian groups needed every traveler and trader to reliably find water, food and safe paths across vast stretches of largely featureless desert, and to know which routes connected which trading partners for goods like ochre, tools and ceremonial objects — all without any system of writing to record and pass down that information. A route wrong by even a small margin in true desert conditions could be fatal, and information that depended entirely on one expert's memory, transmitted informally, risked being lost, garbled or simply forgotten across generations.
A simple spoken list of landmarks would have been vulnerable to the same failure modes as any unstructured oral information passed hand to hand — details dropped, sequence scrambled, no built-in way to check whether what was remembered was actually correct. What was needed was an encoding structure durable and self-checking enough that getting the sequence wrong would itself be noticeable.
