The 19-inch equipment rack won by fixing one width and one height unit
A 19-inch frame with a 1.75-inch rack unit, born in telephone exchanges and codified as EIA-310, became the one mount that fits all telecom and server gear.

A 19-inch rack is a standardized frame for mounting electronic equipment, and nearly every module has a front panel 19 inches (482.6mm) wide that includes the ears it bolts to. It is used for servers, telecom equipment, networking hardware, broadcast and professional audio gear and scientific instruments, across industries.
The format began in the telephone network. Around 1922 the Bell System established a rack with a fixed 19-inch front panel width and a repeating 1.75-inch (44.45mm) vertical unit — the 'rack unit' or 'U' — to reduce the space required for repeater and termination equipment in a central office. That width and height unit became the backbone of the telephone system's build-out.
The racks are split into regions each 44.45mm (1.75 inches) high, with three complete hole pairs per region on each side. Equipment is described in whole units of that height — 1U, 2U, 4U — and a full cabinet commonly holds 42U. A unit's front panel is 1/32 inch less than the allotted height to leave a little clearance for removal.
Because the hole spacing repeats exactly and the pattern is vertically symmetric, equipment can be mounted upside down and different vendors' gear can share a rack. The Electronic Industries Association codified these dimensions as EIA-310, and that single standardization is why the 19-inch frame still holds almost all rack-mountable technology a century later.

The 19-inch rack and the 1.75-inch rack unit became the universal standard for mounting electronics, formalized in EIA-310 and reflected in IEC 60297 and DIN 41494. It moved from telephone exchanges to computing, audio, broadcast and scientific gear. The only significant competitor, the 23-inch Western Electric rack, survives mainly in legacy telephone facilities. Modern refinements like square holes for boltless mounting changed the hardware but not the 19-inch geometry.
