The Sanguozhi (Records of the Three Kingdoms), the primary historical source for this period, credits Zhuge Liang with fielding an improved single-wheeled barrow — the 'wooden ox' and 'flowing horse' — for these campaigns, carrying a reported capacity on the order of a year's grain supply, roughly 200 kilograms or more, per unit. The specific mechanical details are debated by historians, and some later popular accounts (including elements in the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms) embellished the device well beyond what the sparse original record describes, so the exact mechanism should be treated with appropriate caution; what is well documented is the basic principle.
