Rename the word, not the cat: street cats re-issued under their ancient names as a grand-prize show
the problem
People skip adopting native 土猫 because '土' (mundane) reads unworthy next to imported breeds; the barrier is the word, not the animal.
background
In Chinese, the everyday word for a native street cat — 土猫 (tu mao), roughly 'earthy cat' — carries the same flavour as calling a thing 'plain' or 'country' next to a pedigreed import: serviceable, familiar, unglamorous. Shelters and pet charities keep pushing adoption, but a rescue that cannot touch the label cannot fully lift the animal's standing. The barrier lived in language, not in the cats themselves.
Fighting the stigma head-on meant arguing '土 is fine', which rehearses the very dismissiveness it wants to undo. 友望 (Uwant), a pet-appliance brand, needed to change how the label itself is read.
what everyone would do
The textbook response to a stigmatising name is to argue with it: education campaigns insisting '土 is good', testimonials from satisfied native-cat owners, or brand-building ads defending the label head-on. All of these rehearse the dismissiveness they fight, entrenching the very word they want to escape, and they ask the audience to override a habitual reaction they did not consciously choose.
what they saw
The barrier is the word, not the cat: ancient Chinese texts gave these coat patterns formal names — tricolor = 滚地锦 'Rolling Brocade', black-back white-belly = 乌云盖雪 'Dark Clouds Over Snow'. Restore the name and the animal's register changes though the cat is untouched.
the move
On International Cat Day (8 August), Uwant held a '中国土猫大赏' (China's Native-Cat Grand Prize) that re-issued street cats under the formal poetic names ancient Chinese textiles and breed books once assigned by coat pattern — a tricolor became 滚地锦 ('Rolling Brocade'), a black-back white-belly 乌云盖雪 ('Dark Clouds Over Snow') — and presented them 'Grand Prize' trophies in the manner of a pedigree show, so the perceived value and adoptability of the cats shift without the animal changing at all.
why it works
The rename changes which category the audience places the cat in, and category placement drives perceived status more than the underlying object does. '土猫' slots the cat into the 'plain everyday thing' frame, which has no surprise and no dignity, so the instinct to adopt never gets a reason to fire. Re-listed under an ancient poetic name, the same animal enters the 'named treasure' frame: a specific, admired, collectable name signals that someone once prized this cat enough to give it a title, and an award-show trophy converts that title into social proof. Because the whole move is additive language and ceremony — no product change, no behaviour to learn, no improved shelter to stage — the perception shift is instantaneous and costs little to run, and each adoption day or festival lets the brand re-issue the frame for free.
the payoff
The drive drew multi-outlet coverage (SocialBeta, 网易, 4A广告网) and Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu outdoor screens; no adoption or reach figures were published — the impact rests on the brand's own telling.
where it breaks
It fails when the audience already places a different value on the old label and the ancient alternative carries no cultural residue — if the poetic name is unknown, the relabel reads as invented marketing rather than as a discovery. It depends on a real historical register existing (textile terms, breeder books, folk names); for a genuine slur with no courtly counterpart there is nothing to restore. And if the category cannot be presented with ceremony — a mass, anonymous commodity where individual dignity is un-observable — the trophy show has no click.
what came after
Renaming is cheap, reusable and needs no product change; the pattern — restoring a stigmatised class's ancestral formal names and celebrating them with award-show ceremony — gives any pet, goods or category brand a repeatable frame, and it can be re-run on each adoption drive or festival.
