Wikifarmer sold Greek farmers' market-rejected rice to weddings, since throwing rice doesn't need to be edible-grade
the problem
EU market standards reject part of Greece's rice harvest as non-commercial, while weddings waste hundreds of tons of full-grade rice on the same tradition every year
background
Greece holds an estimated 53,000 weddings a year, and the traditional rice-throwing at each one uses full commercial-grade edible rice — hundreds of tons of it scattered on church steps and pavements annually. At the same time, EU market standards reject a share of Greek rice harvests as 'non-commercial' for cosmetic or grading reasons that don't affect the grain's basic usability, leaving farmers with rice they can't sell at full price.
Nobody had connected these as the same shipment: the rice rejected for retail sale is structurally fine, just not cosmetically graded for supermarket shelves — exactly the kind of rice a wedding scatters on the ground anyway, since nobody eats confetti rice off church steps.
the move
Wikifarmer, an existing farmer-to-buyer agricultural marketplace, opened a new product line letting wedding planners and couples buy this market-rejected rice directly from farmers in bulk for the ceremony, at a lower price than retail rice, with the proceeds going to the farmers who grew it instead of to landfill or animal feed.
the payoff
More than 3 tons of wedding rice sold in the campaign's first week, a 260% increase in rice sales on the Wikifarmer platform, and a 110% increase in overall platform traffic, according to the campaign's official case page.
what came after
'The Wedding Rice' won Greece's first-ever Cannes Lions Grand Prix, in Creative Business Transformation, at Cannes Lions 2026, and is cited as a model for turning an agricultural 'waste' grading category into a second retail channel rather than writing it off as loss.
