#1218 2026 · Latina Televisión (with Fahrenheit DDB Peru), for the Peruvian Cancer Foundation · Broadcast television / charitable media
Sold out in prime time, Latina sped up its own shows 0.7% to clone ad slots for a charity
the problem
Peak screening slots were pre-sold out, and a charity could only ever get late-night placement
background
The Peruvian Cancer Foundation runs its 'Ponle Corazón' annual fundraising drive on broadcast TV, where reach is the whole game. But prime time — the block where a charity's plea actually reaches the millions whose attention matters — is booked out months in advance by the country's biggest brands; the channel, Latina, had nothing free to donate. The foundation's message was banished to late night and low-audience hours, exactly where an urgent cancer message is wasted.
The obvious responses all fail: bump a paying advertiser to give the charity the slot, and you burn the revenue prime time exists for; keep the charity in the cheap hours, and the drive reaches nobody; or wait for a free moment that never comes. A charity with no media budget and a channel with an already-sold schedule looked like an unsolvable constraint.
what everyone would do
Every conventional response fails because prime-time inventory is truly gone: pay the going rate and bankrupt a charity, ask the channel to bump a paying advertiser and destroy the revenue the block exists for, or accept the graveyard slot and reach nobody. None creates a new slot where none exists, because all of them take 'the schedule is full' at face value and none interrogates the physics of playback itself.
what they saw
Playback time is a resource, not a fixed schedule: a sold-out broadcaster manufactures more of it by accelerating content past perception — the medium's own speed is the inventory
the move
Latina found the inventory inside the medium itself: it imperceptibly accelerated prime-time playback by 0.7% — a speed change the human eye and ear cannot consciously notice — so a programme that ran 45 minutes of content plus 15 minutes of ads shrank to 44 minutes, freeing one entire minute that 'didn't exist'. That manufactured minute aired two free 30-second charity spots for several consecutive weeks in the most valuable block on screen, at 0% media spend.
why it works
The slot appears out of nothing because real-time playback is an illusion: a programme the audience experiences as live is played back slightly slowly to absorb scheduling slack, so there is recoverable time baked into every hour. By accelerating just 0.7%, Latina borrowed that hidden slack at sub-perceptual threshold — fast enough to reclaim a full minute per show, slow enough that no viewer detects it and no contract, rating promise or ad placement is disturbed. Because the reclaimed minute is not cut from any existing commercial, it costs the channel nothing and displaces nobody, so the charity gets a slot in the most expensive block without touching the revenue that block earns. The outsider's version of the same logic — the procurist's 'there must be time in there' — is why the trick transfers: the limit was never airtime, it was the willingness to treat the schedule as physics rather than as a ledger.
the payoff
The minute put two free prime-time charity spots on air weekly at 0% spend — and won El Sol 2026's Media Grand Prix
where it breaks
It fails where playback is already at or beyond real time or the content is live and unaccelerable — news, live sport and debut simulcasts can't be silently sped up, and streamed VOD with true speed playback has no hidden clock to claw. It needs a fixed-schedule medium whose audience never A/Bs the same minute, so professional reviewers, transnational simulcasts or second-screen watchers can catch the drift and turn an invisible tweak into a scandal. And the gift is only as strong as the slot's value: in a market where prime time itself is cheap or the charity's cause is not measurable, a manufactured minute wins no virtue or attention.
what came after
The technique generalises to any ad-supported medium whose content plays slightly slower than real time: accelerate within the threshold of perception and the schedule itself yields inventory nobody knew existed, letting a no-budget cause buy the slot money supposedly buys outright.
