The Space Shuttle's external fuel tank, more than 15 stories tall, sat exposed on the launch pad for extended periods before each mission, and NASA's original design called for painting it white — the standard assumption being that the tank's spray-on foam insulation needed protection from the sun's ultraviolet light, the same logic that leads to painting any outdoor equipment left in weather. The first two shuttle missions, STS-1 and STS-2 in 1981, flew with tanks painted white under that assumption, never tested against an alternative.

Painting a structure that size wasn't free: covering the tank's full surface area in white latex paint added an estimated 600 pounds of dead weight to every launch, weight that came directly out of the payload the shuttle could otherwise carry into orbit — cargo capacity was the shuttle program's most valuable and contested resource, fought over mission by mission.
