Every 19th-century Arctic expedition ship before the Fram was built the same way: a hull reinforced and strengthened to resist being crushed when pack ice closed in around it, because engineers assumed the only defense against a force that powerful was raw structural strength. Ship after ship, reinforced by that logic, was still eventually crushed and sunk by pack ice, including the USS Jeannette in 1881 — whose wreckage, found on Greenland's coast three years after it sank near Siberia, revealed something more useful than a cautionary tale: the debris had drifted clear across the Arctic Ocean on a current nobody had mapped.

Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen read that drift pattern as an opportunity rather than a warning: if a current already carried wreckage across the Arctic, a ship could ride that same current toward the North Pole — deliberately freezing itself into the pack ice instead of trying to avoid or outlast it. That plan only worked if the ship itself could survive years locked in ice that had crushed every reinforced hull sent against it before.

Shipbuilder Colin Archer designed the Fram with a smooth, rounded hull and no flat vertical sides for ice to grip — rather than resisting the ice's crushing pressure with thicker walls, the shape let the ship 'slip like an eel out of the embraces of the ice,' as Nansen put it, being squeezed upward and riding on top of the ice instead of being pinched and broken between it. In September 1893, Nansen sailed the Fram deliberately into the pack ice near the New Siberian Islands and let it freeze in.

the payoff

The Fram stayed frozen into the drifting ice for nearly three years, from October 1893 to August 1896, drifting exactly along the predicted current from the New Siberian Islands westward to emerge north of Spitsbergen, without the hull ever being breached. Nansen and a companion left the ship partway through by sledge and reached 86°13.6′N in April 1895, nearly three degrees closer to the pole than any previous expedition, a record that held for five years; all twelve crew members who sailed on the Fram returned home alive in 1896, an outcome unheard of for Arctic pack-ice expeditions up to that point.

The Fram's hull design became the reference standard for polar ships that followed, including vessels used in later Amundsen expeditions, and the ship itself is preserved today as the centerpiece of the Fram Museum in Oslo — still the only wooden ship to have sailed both farthest north and farthest south of any vessel in history.
