Mosler Safe Company, based in Hamilton, Ohio, manufactured bank vaults and safes throughout the early twentieth century, competing in an industry where every manufacturer claimed fire and burglary resistance but none could offer proof beyond controlled, company-run laboratory tests that skeptical customers had every reason to discount as self-interested.
After the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, US military teams surveying the devastated city found Teikoku Bank, near ground zero, almost entirely destroyed above ground, but discovered that vaults built by Mosler in the bank's ruined basement had survived intact, with their contents undamaged inside. The first public account of the discovery appeared in the Hamilton, Ohio Journal-Daily News on July 10, 1946, with Mosler supplying photographs of the bomb-damaged bank alongside the still-functional vault.

The company built decades of advertising and sales material around the photographs and documented account of the surviving vault, and the discovery's credibility with the US military led directly to further testing contracts: Mosler vaults were later subjected to actual atomic blast testing in the Nevada desert as part of military programs including Operation Plumbbob, generating additional real-world evidence the company incorporated into its marketing. This let Mosler make a durability claim, our vaults can survive an atomic bomb, so extreme that a conventional advertising campaign asserting it would have seemed absurd or dishonest, but which the company could support with documented, third-party-witnessed, unstaged historical fact. The Hiroshima vault survival became one of the most widely retold stories in security-industry marketing history, still referenced in company histories and journalism decades later specifically because its evidentiary power came from an event the company did not design and could not have faked.
why it works
The claim's power came specifically from the fact that Mosler could not have staged it: an atomic bomb detonated by a foreign military during a war is unimpeachably independent of the manufacturer's own interests, which meant the evidence carried a credibility no self-run laboratory test or advertising claim, however true, could match. The event also generated third-party institutional interest, the US military's own follow-up testing, that further validated and amplified the original claim well beyond what advertising spend alone could have purchased.
