Haiti's earthquake texts were translated in 10 minutes by a diaspora on another continent

Haitians texted 80,000 pleas for help in Kreyòl; responders read neither the language nor the city
background
After the January 2010 earthquake, Haitians' mobile phones stayed alive on generator recharges — 'a lifeline for many survivors' — while formal communications collapsed. A free SMS shortcode, 4636, was set up jointly by Ushahidi, FrontlineSMS, the US State Department and Telecoms Sans Frontieres so anyone could text location and urgent needs at no charge. Messages arrived at 1,000 to 2,000 per day, almost all in Kreyòl, often with street-level descriptions no foreign responder could parse and no adequate maps existed to place.
Rob Munro at Stanford and Ushahidi's Brian Herbert built Mission 4636: an internet-based workflow that let more than 1,000 Haitian volunteers in the United States and Canada — the diaspora — remotely translate incoming texts, assign preliminary geolocation, and flag urgent reports for triage, working around the clock across time zones.
what everyone would do
Hire professional translators and GIS analysts through procurement — days of contracting in a disaster, no Kreyòl street knowledge, and no way to place 'near the market by Jean's house' on any map.
what they saw
The people who could read those texts in seconds lived in Miami and Montreal, not Port-au-Prince. Route the work to the diaspora: language, geography and motivation arrive in the same volunteers.
the move
The diaspora is the processing layer: each text is micro-tasked to a volunteer who shares the language, the street names and often the neighborhood itself; volunteers in constant phone contact with relatives inside Haiti resolve ambiguities official mappers could not ('that crossroads near the blue church'), so a message becomes a geo-coordinated, translated, actionable report — average turnaround about ten minutes from receipt to ground team.
why it works
Every bottleneck dissolves in the same person: a Haitian-American volunteer reads Kreyòl fluently, recognizes the named neighborhood, and can phone a relative still in Haiti to confirm a landmark — three verification layers that institutions would staff as three departments. Micro-tasking lets a thousand such volunteers pick up messages asynchronously across time zones, so the queue never sleeps; free shortcodes remove the sender's cost barrier; and emotional stakes turn speed into a personal matter, producing the ten-minute turnaround no contracted service matched.
the payoff
Over 80,000 messages processed; 25,186 SMS translated into 3,596 actionable mapped reports; ~10-minute average turnaround to ground teams
where it breaks
The evaluation is blunt: of 3,500+ published map reports only 202 were marked verified — actionable-ness outran accuracy, and responders' trust in the map lagged the volunteers' speed. Coordination with formal relief agencies was improvised and often absent (did responders actually use the map?), data privacy concerns emerged, and the model presumes connectivity inside the disaster zone and an organized diaspora outside it — neither generalizes. Volunteer surges also fade with the news cycle, leaving sustainability unresolved.
what came after
Mission 4636 became the founding case of digital humanitarian response — copied in subsequent disasters worldwide — and the standing proof that diaspora communities can serve as a crisis workforce from another continent.
