A Brazilian mechanic lit his workshop with a soda bottle full of water, and a Filipino NGO turned it into daylight for a million homes with no grid connection

Roughly a billion people live without reliable electricity, and even where a home is close enough to informal settlement lighting, extending a full grid connection or paying for solar panel systems can be years away or unaffordable — the interior of a windowless shack or a home with a corrugated metal roof stays dark even at midday, forcing families to work, cook, and manage childcare by candlelight or not at all during daylight hours. The standard fixes were about supplying electricity: grid extension, solar-panel donation programs, kerosene lamps sold at a recurring cost — all either capital-intensive, slow to reach the poorest households, or an ongoing expense.
Alfredo Moser, a mechanic in Uberaba, Brazil, wanted light in his workshop during a 2002 blackout and had no money for a generator. He filled a two-liter plastic soda bottle with water, added a small amount of bleach to keep algae from clouding it, and fitted it through a hole cut in his corrugated roof — the water refracted the sun's light down into the room below, for the cost of a used bottle and a few drops of bleach.
the move
Illac Diaz's MyShelter Foundation, an NGO in the Philippines, turned Moser's bottle-bulb into a scaled social enterprise starting in April 2011: rather than distribute the bottles as free aid, it trained and paid local community members to assemble, install and maintain them under a local-entrepreneur business model, installing 15,000 solar bottle bulbs across twenty Philippine cities within months of launch, then open-sourcing the design and technique so other organizations worldwide could replicate the same installation-and-livelihood model.
the payoff
The initiative deployed over 200,000 bottle bulbs globally within its first year and had reached roughly 1 million homes across multiple continents by 2015, with active programs in more than 25 countries from Argentina to Zambia; Brazil's own branch, working in the country where the original invention began, had by itself reached over 20,000 people through more than 3,700 installations across some 120 communities. Each bottle delivers daylight-hours illumination roughly equivalent to a 40–60 watt incandescent bulb and typically lasts about five years installed.
what came after
Liter of Light is now cited as a reference case in social-enterprise and appropriate-technology circles for open-sourcing a near-zero-cost invention and pairing it with a paid local-labor distribution model instead of charity giveaways, and Moser's original bottle-light technique — sometimes called the 'Moser lamp' or 'solar bottle bulb' — has since been adapted with small solar-charged LED add-ons for nighttime lighting in later program iterations.
