Instrument flying is a trust exercise: a pilot has to believe the gauges over what their inner ear is telling them, a reflex normally built only by logging real hours in real weather with a real instructor beside them. Bad weather grounded training, aircraft were costly to run, and a nonzero share of trainees died learning the hard way.
Edwin Link had grown up in his family's player-piano and pipe-organ factory in Binghamton, New York, with no aviation credentials of his own. He noticed that the pneumatic bellows used to make a church organ swell and sway under air pressure could just as easily tilt an enclosed cockpit in response to a pilot's own control inputs.

The standard path to a competent instrument pilot was more flight hours with an instructor in a real aircraft, accepting that training would be gated by good weather, aircraft availability, fuel cost, and a nonzero accident rate among trainees.

Link, an organ-factory engineer, saw that the bellows tilting a pipe organ could just as easily tilt a cockpit — instrument flying needed only a device that answered a pilot's own control input.
the move
Link built an enclosed trainer cockpit mounted on organ bellows that pitched and rolled as a student worked the controls, paired with real flight instruments, so a pilot could practice instrument flying on the ground, in any weather, with no risk of a crash. He first sold the device as a carnival and amusement-park ride, since the aviation industry did not initially take it seriously.
why it works
Instrument flying is a skill of trusting gauges over inner-ear sensation, built by repeatedly matching control inputs to instrument feedback until it becomes reflex. The Link Trainer reproduced exactly that loop — input, gauge response, correction — without needing real lift, real weather, or real risk. Because it was compact, cheap, and weatherproof, a flight school could run trainees through reflex-building repetitions far faster than aircraft scheduling ever allowed, which is why it scaled to hundreds of thousands of pilots within a few wartime years.
the payoff
More than 500,000 Allied pilots trained on Link Trainers during World War II, making it the standard tool for teaching instrument flying.
where it breaks
A simulator only transfers skill for the parts of the task it faithfully reproduces; early Link Trainers taught instrument scanning and control coordination well but could not teach the real g-forces, emergencies, or crew coordination of actual flight, so pilots still needed real air hours before combat or passenger duty. It also depends on someone taking a 'toy' device seriously — Link spent years selling his trainer as an amusement ride before a string of 1934 airmail weather crashes forced the Army Air Corps to adopt it.
what came after
The Link Trainer is recognized as the first mass-produced flight simulator and the direct ancestor of every modern flight simulator used to train and certify commercial and military pilots today.
