In 1992, Sprint needed a cell tower in Monument, Colorado, a town near Colorado Springs prized for its unobstructed mountain views. The town's planning process pushed back: a bare steel lattice tower on the ridgeline was exactly the kind of visual intrusion local zoning existed to stop, and no amount of coverage-map argument was going to change a purely aesthetic objection.
Sprint's contractor turned to the Larson Company, a firm that had spent years building artificial rockwork and greenery for zoos, museums and Disney theme parks — the same faux-landscape techniques used to hide fences and equipment from park visitors. Applied to a cell tower, the same trick meant building a full steel structure and antenna array inside a fiberglass and vinyl branch shell shaped and painted to read as a pine tree from the ground.

Larson built the first "monopine" — a fully functional cellular tower disguised as a tree, engineered to pass wind-tunnel testing under its foliage shell — and installed it at the Monument site instead of contesting the zoning objection through further review or litigation. Larson Camouflage grew into a standing division of the business, expanding the concept regionally: monopalms and slim-line cypresses for the South and Southwest, monoelms and pines for temperate climates, and fiberglass saguaro cacti for the Arizona desert, each shell fitted to the antennas and structure a given carrier needed underneath.

Disguised "fauxliage" towers are now a recognized category across the US telecom industry, with multiple competing concealment manufacturers and standard product lines by region and antenna type. The mechanism has since been borrowed well outside telecom: cell equipment hidden inside fake water towers, flagpoles, and church steeples follows the same logic of resolving an aesthetic veto by changing the object's appearance rather than fighting the veto itself.
