background
In 1854, the dominant medical theory held that cholera spread through 'miasma' — bad air from decaying matter — and public health responses focused accordingly on ventilation and general sanitation rather than any specific water source. When a severe outbreak hit London's Soho district in late August, killing around 500 people within ten days, the miasma theory offered no way to explain why the outbreak was so geographically concentrated rather than following prevailing winds.
Physician John Snow had already suspected water, not air, carried cholera, but suspicion alone hadn't been enough to overturn the medical consensus. Rather than argue theory, he treated the outbreak itself as the evidence: he began systematically recording the address of every cholera death in the area, information that existed but that no one had yet assembled into a single, comparable picture.
the move
Snow built a map plotting every recorded cholera death's location alongside the locations of the neighborhood's public water pumps, and the pattern that emerged was unambiguous: deaths clustered tightly around a single pump on Broad Street, with almost no cases among people who drew water elsewhere, including a nearby brewery whose workers drank beer instead of pump water and stayed almost entirely unaffected. On September 7, 1854, Snow presented the map to local officials and persuaded them to remove the Broad Street pump's handle, even though the water-borne theory it implied hadn't been medically accepted yet.
the payoff
New cholera cases in the area dropped sharply almost immediately after the handle's removal, and later investigation confirmed the pump's well had been contaminated by a leaking nearby cesspit. Snow's map-based method, rather than any medical treatment, is credited with ending the outbreak's spread in that neighborhood.
what came after
The Broad Street map is now the founding case study of modern epidemiology and spatial data analysis in public health, taught worldwide as the origin of mapping incidents against a shared variable to reveal causes invisible in case-by-case review — the same method underlies contemporary disease surveillance, crime mapping and industrial failure-cluster analysis.
