background
In 1965, W.H. Smith, then the largest book retailer in Great Britain, announced plans to move its warehouse operations onto a computerized inventory system within two years — a major modernization effort for a book trade that had always identified individual titles by name, author and edition in ordinary prose. That worked well enough for a human employee browsing a shelf, but a computer system needed something far more precise and consistent to reliably track and reorder specific books.
The British book trade convened working groups, including the Publishers Association's Distribution and Methods Committee, to design a solution, and the resulting numbering method came to be closely associated with Gordon Foster, then an academic statistician at Trinity College Dublin who had been drawn into the project.
what everyone would do
Keep identifying books in the warehouse system by their existing titles and author names, or some abbreviated version of that same information — the natural approach for a bookstore's inventory, and one that worked fine for a human clerk pulling a book off a shelf by eye, but broke down as soon as that same information had to be entered, matched and searched reliably by a computer, since two different editions, printings or translations of the same title could look identical in a title-only description.
what they saw
The problem wasn't that books lacked identifying information — it was that the identifying information that already existed (title, author, publisher, edition) was verbose, inconsistent in format, and genuinely ambiguous between different but similarly-described editions of the same work. What a computerized ordering system actually needed wasn't more descriptive text, it was a single, short, unique numeric code standing in for all of that, the way a single part number lets a factory track a component without re-describing it in full every time it's referenced.
the move
The result was the Standard Book Number (SBN), a 9-digit code assigned uniquely to each book, with specific digits reserved to identify the publisher and the exact edition, plus a final check digit to catch transcription errors — completed in 1966 and put into use by W.H. Smith's new computerized system in 1967.
why it works
By assigning every book a fixed-length numeric code, Gordon Foster's Standard Book Number system let W.H. Smith's new computer system store, match, and retrieve any title with a single reliable lookup instead of comparing long, error-prone text strings, collapsing what had been a slow, mistake-prone process into something a machine could do instantly. Because the number was structured, with digits reserved for the publisher and the specific edition, plus a check digit to catch transcription errors, rather than assigned arbitrarily, it stayed compatible with expansion far beyond one bookstore chain's warehouse, letting the system scale from a single retailer's internal code to an international standard, formalized as the 10-digit ISO 2108 in 1970, adopted across the entire global publishing industry.
the payoff
The SBN gave W.H. Smith's computer system a single, unambiguous number to store and match instead of comparing long, inconsistent text descriptions, and other retailers and publishers in the UK book trade adopted the same numbering scheme rather than build competing systems of their own.
where it breaks
It only works if every participant in the system — every publisher, printer, distributor and retailer — actually assigns and uses the code consistently; a single publisher skipping or misassigning numbers reintroduces exactly the ambiguity the system was built to remove. And a fixed-length numeric code eventually runs into its own capacity limits as the number of items needing unique codes grows past what the original digit count can hold, which is exactly why the system had to expand from 9 digits to 10 within its first five years and has faced renewed capacity pressure as global publishing output has grown far beyond what 1965 planners anticipated.
what came after
The International Organization for Standardization adopted an expanded 10-digit version of the format as ISO 2108 in 1970, creating the International Standard Book Number — the ISBN now printed on virtually every book published anywhere in the world, still built on the same underlying logic Gordon Foster and the British book trade worked out to solve one retailer's 1965 warehouse computerization problem.
