background
The Inca Empire's road network, the Qhapac Ñan, spanned roughly 40,000 kilometers across some of the most difficult terrain in the world, including the length of the Andes mountains, and the empire depended on fast, reliable communication between the capital Cuzco and administrative centers thousands of kilometers away. A single messenger attempting to run the full distance between major cities would need days or weeks, pacing themselves for endurance rather than speed, and would still eventually need rest, food and sleep along the way.
Rather than rely on individual endurance runners covering as much distance as possible before exhaustion, the Inca state built a relay infrastructure designed around handoff rather than endurance — treating long-distance message delivery as a problem best solved by many runners each sprinting a short distance, not one runner enduring a long one.

The Inca stationed relay runners, chaskis, at chaskiwasi posts spaced roughly 6 to 9 kilometers apart along the road network — close enough that each runner covered only a short, sprintable distance before handing the message, spoken aloud or encoded in a knotted quipu cord to preserve accuracy, to a fresh runner waiting at the next station, who immediately continued at full speed.

The relay system could move a message or urgent goods up to roughly 240 kilometers in a single day — fast enough to carry news, orders, or even perishable items like fresh seafood from the coast to noble tables hundreds of miles inland, before spoiling, across terrain and distance no single runner could have covered at that speed.

The chaski relay system is cited by historians of logistics and communication alongside the Mongol yam and Roman cursus publicus as one of history's clearest proofs that a relay of fresh short-distance sprinters beats a single long-distance endurance effort — the same handoff logic underlies modern relay racing, distributed computing task-splitting, and courier-network design.
