Focus Media put its screens where no one could change the channel: the elevator lobby

the problem

Viewers were tuning out or skipping ads on every existing channel

background

By the early 2000s, Chinese advertisers were fighting for attention in the same saturated channels as everyone else — television people muted or left the room for, newspapers people flipped past, billboards people's eyes slid over on a commute they'd made a thousand times. More spending in those channels bought diminishing returns; the problem wasn't the ads, it was that audiences had built a lifetime of habits for ignoring them.

Jason Jiang had run an ad agency before founding Focus Media, and the insight that became the company came from an ordinary moment of boredom: standing in an elevator lobby, waiting, staring at a poster because there was nothing else to look at. An elevator wait is short, enclosed and unskippable — the one daily pocket of attention nobody had monetized. Focus Media built a screen network into exactly that pocket, in office towers and apartment blocks across China's fastest-growing cities.

the move

Jason Jiang, waiting bored in a Shanghai office-building elevator lobby in 2002, noticed a static poster nobody could avoid looking at — and realized the wait for the elevator was a captive, unskippable pocket of attention nobody was selling. Focus Media, founded in 2003, installed flat-screen ad displays in the lobbies and cars of office towers and apartment blocks, charging for the one kind of attention viewers could not mute, fast-forward or scroll past.

the payoff

Focus Media went public on Nasdaq in 2005, raising $172 million in what was then the largest US listing by a Chinese company; it grew to dominate elevator advertising across hundreds of Chinese cities, was taken private in a $3.7 billion buyout in 2013 after a short-seller attack, and relisted on the Shenzhen exchange in 2015. It reported roughly ¥12.3 billion (about $1.7 billion) in revenue in 2024.

what came after

Focus Media created and still dominates in-elevator advertising as a category in China, weathering a 2013 short-seller attack and privatization to relist in Shenzhen — proof the underlying insight, sell the wait itself, outlasted a single bad news cycle.
