In 1971 the National Accelerator Laboratory outside Chicago — today Fermilab — was four years into building the biggest machine on Earth: a four-mile ring of more than a thousand magnets meant to drive protons to 200 billion electron volts. Its director had promised Washington the whole thing for $250 million in five years, and every component ran on that clock. Before a beam could survive inside the ring, its vacuum tubes had to be spotless.

They were not. Cutting the stainless tubes during assembly had left metal slivers inside, and each time a magnet was powered, the slivers were pulled into its gap, stood on end, and stopped the beam. Two magnets failed, then two a day; over several months 350 were replaced. The machine that was supposed to prove itself kept dying of dirt, and the obvious fix — designing a tool to clean the tubes — was months of engineering the schedule did not have.

When she emerged, technicians tied a cleaner-soaked swab to the string and pulled it through behind her.

The shavings only had to be dragged out: anything that could travel the pipe under its own power would carry a string through, and the string pulls a cleaner-soaked swab behind it.
