Canned beverages in the 1950s universally required a separate opening tool — the 'church key' can opener — a dependency nobody in the beverage or packaging industry had seriously tried to eliminate, since the can itself was assumed to need a separate tool by definition, the same way bottles needed a separate opener. Losing or forgetting the tool meant a can simply couldn't be opened.
Ermal Fraze, an engineer who had founded the Dayton Reliable Tool & Manufacturing Company as a machine-tool business in 1949, found himself at a family picnic in the late 1950s without a church key and improvised by cracking cans open against his car's bumper. Rather than simply remember to bring an opener next time, he treated the problem as a design flaw in the can itself.
what everyone would do
The obvious response to forgetting an accessory tool is behavioral: remember to bring it next time, keep a spare on your keychain, buy a can opener for the car. That treats the dependency on a separate tool as a fixed fact of the product category, the same way generations of engineers and can manufacturers before Fraze had — nobody in the beverage-can industry had seriously questioned whether the tool was actually necessary at all.
what they saw
Fraze's insight wasn't a clever workaround for the moment (cracking the can on his bumper already was that) — it was refusing to treat the workaround as a one-off and instead asking why a can needed a separate tool to open at all. The accessory dependency had gone unquestioned for decades not because it was hard to solve, but because everyone who hit the problem solved it the same easy way he almost did: remember the tool, don't redesign the can.
the move
Fraze engineered a tear-strip tab riveted directly into the can's metal lid, letting a user open the can by pulling an attached ring rather than needing any separate tool at all — a self-contained opening mechanism that also had to maintain a reliable seal, a combination other engineers had reportedly attempted without success. Alcoa, which had approached Fraze around 1959 about improving can-opening mechanisms, licensed his design exclusively, supplying the specialized aluminum and managing distribution of the technology to can packers and manufacturers; Fraze received a patent for the tear-strip opener in 1963.
why it works
Riveting the opening mechanism directly into the can's lid eliminates the separate tool by making the can self-sufficient — there is no longer a second object that can be forgotten, lost, or left behind, because the function that object performed now travels with the product itself. This works specifically because the accessory dependency was never actually necessary for the can to work, only historically assumed to be; once an engineer built a tab that both tore reliably and preserved the can's seal (the part other engineers had reportedly failed to solve), the entire accessory category became unnecessary in one stroke. The scale of adoption that followed — 75% of US breweries within six years, 10 billion cans by 1968 — reflects that the fix didn't just reduce friction, it removed a cost every single can-opening moment had quietly imposed for decades.
the payoff
Iron City Beer in Pittsburgh, the first commercial customer, saw a 400% sales increase in its first year using the design, and by 1965 over 75% of US breweries had adopted Fraze's pull-tab can. Fraze's manufacturing operation scaled to 360 employees across five plants producing 400 can tops a minute, and by 1968 an estimated 10 billion beer cans carried his design; his later refinement, the 1977 'Easy Open Ecology End' push-in fold-back tab that eliminated litter from detached ring-pulls, was used on over 150 billion cans by 1988.
where it breaks
This only works when the accessory dependency is genuinely eliminable by integrating its function into the product, rather than serving some purpose that actually requires a separate object (a tool that must be shared, reused, or kept sterile between uses, for instance). It also requires solving the engineering problem completely, not partially — a tab that tore unreliably or broke the can's seal would have been worse than the church key it replaced, which is exactly why the earlier attempts other engineers made had failed. And integrating the function raises the product's own manufacturing complexity and cost per unit; the trade only pays off when eliminating the accessory's friction (forgetting it, losing it, needing to own one at all) is worth more to the customer and the manufacturer than the added cost of building the function into every single unit produced.
what came after
Fraze held 127 US and international patents by the end of his career and left an estate valued at more than $40 million, funding the Fraze Pavilion amphitheater in Kettering, Ohio; the stay-tab principle his original design evolved into remains the standard can-opening mechanism on beverage cans worldwide.
