Clash Royale won back players from clone games by paying them to admit they'd been playing the clones

the problem

When cheap imitators clone a hit game's mechanics and pull away players, legal takedown campaigns target the clones directly but do nothing to bring back the players who already left — the original game just loses users to competitors it can sue but can't actually win back

background

A successful mobile game inevitably attracts cheap clone titles that copy its mechanics, characters and gameplay loop to capture players without the cost of original development. The standard corporate response — cease-and-desist letters, app-store takedown requests, legal action against the cloning studios — treats the problem as one of intellectual property enforcement, and even when successful, does nothing to reclaim the players who had already migrated to the clones and built up progress there; those players simply move to the next clone rather than returning to the original.

Clash Royale's 'Copycats Welcome' campaign, instead, treated the departed players as the actual target rather than the clone studios. A dedicated microsite let players who had been playing copycat titles submit proof of their progress in those clones and convert it directly into rewards inside the real Clash Royale — up to 50,000 gold and 200 wild card credits — effectively paying players to publicly admit they'd defected to an imitator and rewarding them for coming back.

the move

Rather than fight the clones through legal channels aimed at the copying studios, the campaign targeted the actual asset the clones had captured — player time and progress — and made switching back to the original costless or better than staying, converting what would otherwise be sunk investment in a rival clone into a direct incentive to return, turning the clone ecosystem's own player base into a re-acquisition funnel for the original game.

the payoff

Over 2.3 million players exchanged progress within the campaign's first five days, and Clash Royale welcomed back 1.65 million players within days of launch — a scale of user reactivation that would have been unreachable through legal enforcement against the clone titles alone.

what came after

'Copycats Welcome' won the Grand Prix in Entertainment Lions for Gaming at Cannes Lions 2026, and is cited in gaming and marketing trade press as a model for competitive response to imitation that targets user reacquisition directly rather than routing the response through legal or platform-enforcement channels against the imitator.
