Chen Liji was founded in Guangzhou in 1600 by Li Shengzuo and Chen Tiyuan, and became one of the longest-continuously-operating pharmaceutical makers in China. Traditional Chinese medicine pills of the period were commonly bound with honey into a soft mass and left otherwise unprotected, which worked adequately in the drier climates of northern and central China but failed badly in Lingnan's subtropical humidity: honey-bound pills absorbed moisture, molded, and lost potency within a matter of months, sometimes weeks, undermining both the medicine sold locally and any hope of shipping it further afield.
The pharmacy also worked with imported and highly volatile ingredients — including resins and balsams sourced from as far as the Mediterranean — that were especially vulnerable to oxidation and moisture once compounded into a pill. The standard response available at the time was tighter storage: drier warehouses, more frequent inventory turnover, smaller batches made closer to the point of sale — mitigations that reduced spoilage without eliminating it, and did nothing for the pills a customer carried home into their own humid household.

Sometime in the early Qing dynasty, Chen Liji began sealing each individual pill inside a thin shell of beeswax, cast around the pill so that the wax formed a continuous, airtight, edible barrier between the medicine and the surrounding air. Rather than trying to keep the pill's environment dry, the pharmacy made the pill itself impervious to whatever environment it ended up in — a household well, a ship's hold, decades in storage — because the wax shell, not the room around it, was now doing the preservation work.
why it works
By casting a continuous, airtight beeswax shell around each individual pill, Chen Liji moved the preservation function from the surrounding room to the product itself, so the pill no longer depended on anyone controlling humidity, oxidation exposure, or storage duration correctly. Because the barrier traveled with the pill wherever it went -- a household, a ship's hold, decades underground -- it solved the spoilage problem completely rather than merely slowing it, which is why wax-shell pills recovered from wells after years of submersion during the Second Sino-Japanese War were still found undamaged.

Chen Liji, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's longest continuously operating pharmaceutical manufacturer, still produces wax-shell pills today using a process treated as a closely held trade craft.
where it breaks
This approach depends on finding a barrier material that's genuinely inert, edible or otherwise compatible with the product it protects, cheap enough to apply at the unit level, and capable of forming a truly continuous seal -- a barrier with gaps, or one that reacts chemically with the product it's meant to protect, provides false confidence rather than real protection. It also adds real cost and labor per unit compared to bulk storage improvements, a tradeoff that only pays off when the value of the individual unit and the severity of the spoilage problem justify sealing each one separately rather than accepting some loss and investing in better bulk conditions instead.
what came after
The wax-shell pill is credited in Chinese pharmaceutical history (researched and traced by China Materia Medica Company senior engineer Zhu Sheng) as originating with Chen Liji in the early Qing, predating modern hermetic and blister-pack pharmaceutical sealing by roughly three centuries, and is cited as an early solution to the same core problem industrial pharma later solved industrially: getting a chemically unstable dose intact to wherever, and whenever, it will actually be used.
