Colonial paper currency in the 1730s was a young, fragile experiment: each colony issued its own bills, and any engraver skilled enough to copy a printed design could flood a colony with convincing fakes, undermining confidence in money that only worked if people trusted it was genuine. Franklin, running Pennsylvania's official currency printing under contract, needed a design so intricate that no engraver of the era could reproduce it by hand — but hand-engraving finer and finer patterns only pushed the arms race toward the best-funded counterfeiters, not away from them.

Working with botanist Joseph Breintnall, Franklin adapted a technique for taking detailed impressions of real plant leaves and applied it to currency: pressing an actual leaf's veined surface into a soft casting material to create a printing plate, rather than hand-drawing a pattern for an engraver to imitate.

He rotated designs across sage, blackberry, maple and other leaves, added his own colored fibers and mica flecks into the paper stock itself, and, on some issues, deliberately misspelled 'Pennsylvania' on genuine bills, since counterfeiters who corrected the 'error' unknowingly marked their own fakes as fraudulent.

why it works

Hand-drawn security patterns fail because they're bounded by what a skilled engraver can both create and later replicate — however fine the lines, another engraver operating at the same skill level can eventually trace them. A leaf's vein network has no such ceiling: its branching is irregular at a level of detail that isn't the product of deliberate design, so there's no underlying rule for a counterfeiter to reverse-engineer or a hand skilled enough to freehand-copy it convincingly. Casting the actual leaf into the printing plate meant Franklin didn't need superhuman engraving skill either — he only needed access to a leaf, which put a genuinely uncopyable feature within reach of an ordinary printer.

where it breaks

The technique depends on the verifier being able to compare a suspect bill against a known-genuine pattern closely enough to spot deviations, and on the natural template being difficult to physically obtain and cast by a forger — once photography, molding compounds or digital scanning make capturing organic textures trivial, the same 'nature is too complex to fake' logic stops holding. It also only defeats reproduction by a rival human hand; it does nothing against threats like debasing the currency's backing value or counterfeiting via captured genuine printing plates.

Franklin's nature-print currency is now recognized by paper conservators and historians as America's first systematic anti-counterfeiting program, and a 2023 PNAS materials-science study of surviving bills confirmed the leaf-casting and paper-fiber techniques Franklin used two and a half centuries before spectroscopy could analyze them.
