The classical method for measuring the Earth's circumference, dating to Eratosthenes, required comparing the sun's angle at two widely separated locations a known distance apart — a method that worked but demanded travelling a long, precisely measured distance across difficult terrain, with all the cost, time and error that introduced. In the early 11th century, a scholar working near the frontier of the Islamic world, such as al-Biruni during his time near what is now Pakistan, faced the same problem without the resources or safety to mount a long desert survey expedition purely to fix two reference points.

Simply accepting a less accurate measurement, or waiting for a future expedition with more resources, would have left the question unanswered for a working scholar who needed an answer with the instruments and access he actually had — a single fortress town on a hill, not a state-funded survey party.

From the fort of Nandana, al-Biruni measured the height of a nearby mountain using two angle readings to its summit taken from known ground positions, climbed to its peak, and measured the dip angle at which the horizon fell below true level — the same angle that reveals the Earth's curvature. With just those two measurements and trigonometry, he calculated the Earth's radius without any long-distance travel between separate observation points.

Al-Biruni's result put the Earth's radius at approximately 6,335 kilometers, within roughly 0.6% of the modern measured value of 6,371 kilometers — a level of precision not matched again in the West until the 16th century.

Al-Biruni's single-mountain method is cited in the history of science as a landmark demonstration that a global-scale physical quantity could be derived from a local, single-site measurement through geometry alone, and it remains a standard teaching example of measurement ingenuity substituting for scale of resources.
