Uber's flexible drivers and surge pricing kept supply matched to demand all day.

By letting drivers choose when to work and raising prices at peaks, Uber kept more of its cars occupied than taxi fleets.

Taxi fleets in most cities rely on drivers who are on the clock, and their capacity utilisation is often low in quiet hours even as it spikes during rush periods.

Uber matched passengers and drivers with app-based dispatch, scaled beyond any single taxi company, and let drivers switch on and off while surge pricing signalled where capacity was scarce.

Comparing the two, Cramer and Krueger found UberX drivers had a substantially higher capacity utilisation rate than taxi drivers in five cities, which they attributed to better matching, larger scale, looser regulation and the flexible-labour plus surge-pricing design.
