OUI turns a smartphone clip into an eye doctor for remote clinics

Eye disease is often treatable, but in large parts of the world there is simply no ophthalmologist within reach. OUI, a Japanese medical startup founded by doctors from Keio University, framed the problem not as a shortage of clinics but as a question of who could diagnose. Its answer was to ask what if the people in those regions could become eye doctors themselves.

The result is the Smart Eye Camera, a compact attachment that clips onto a smartphone and uses the phone's own camera and LED lamp to examine the eye. It provides diagnostic performance close to a traditional slit-lamp microscope at roughly a tenth of the price, and it is light and portable enough to carry in a pocket.

Because the interface is simple, a community health worker with no ophthalmology training can run an exam and detect conditions such as cataracts or diabetic retinopathy early. The device converts the phones already present into a distributed diagnostic network, so the bottleneck moves from equipment cost to training and reach.
