Nubank's no-fee purple card rewired Brazil's banking from the app down

Frustrated by bank bureaucracy, David Vélez founded Nubank in 2013 with a no-fee app-first card — 25M customers by 2020, a $41.5B 2021 IPO

Nubank

那一手

In 2013 David Vélez hit the founding wall most people only complain about: trying to open a checking account in Brazil, he drowned in bureaucracy. His answer was Nubank — a purple, no-fee credit card sold entirely through an app, in a market where incumbents charged for everything: account fees, card fees, surprise line items. The pitch was not 'better banking' but 'the bank that charges you nothing'.

The growth was compounding and largely word of mouth: 25 million customers by June 2020 — its seventh anniversary — with the company claiming to have saved them more than $1.5 billion in fees; for about 20% of its customers Nubank issued the first credit card they had ever owned. Product discipline held: open the app, get the card, see everything, pay nothing hidden.

The model monetised at scale: on 8 December 2021 Nubank priced its NYSE IPO at $9 per ADS — valued near $41.5B, the largest-ever IPO of a Latin American bank — with Berkshire, Tencent and Sequoia among shareholders. The shares rose 15% on debut, and by fiscal 2024 the company earned a $2.2B net profit across 114 million customers. The anti-bank had become a bank.

为什么管用

  • Radical clarity is a brand moat: when incumbents profit from opacity, 'no fees, ever' converts distrust into evangelism — customers recruited each other without ad spend.
  • App-first meant variable cost near zero: no branches, no paperwork, so serving a million customers cost about the same as serving a thousand — the model scaled before it monetised.
  • First-card induction built the future book: giving 20% of customers their first credit card bought switching costs a competitor could not break — they never learned any other way.
值了多少Simplicity recruits faster than ads聪明

可以搬走什么

When an industry profits from opacity, growth is radical clarity: make the hidden fee the villain, the app the whole experience, and let the mistreated customers do the selling

后来呢

Nubank hit 114 million customers and sustainable profitability (FY2024 net profit $2.2B), expanding into Mexico and Colombia — the canonical anti-incumbent fintech and proof that a no-fee model can eventually out-earn the fee collectors.
