Misfits Market sold the produce stores throw away, bundled like a milkman
Misfits Market buys cosmetically imperfect produce cheaply, ships it in weekly, neighbourhood-bundled boxes, and has rescued 230M+ pounds of food.
Misfits Market
那一手
A huge share of U.S. food is thrown away over looks: a misshapen pepper, a small apple, a late truck. Abhi Ramesh, who had worked in distressed industries, heard a farmer call these 'misfit apples' and wondered why perfectly good food was going to waste.
He started Misfits Market in 2018 as a subscription: each week customers pick what is available in their region, meet a minimum order, and get it delivered on a fixed day. Most postcodes get just one or two delivery days, so an entire street's boxes go out together rather than one parcel at a time. Procurement is a manual, relationship-driven process with growers.
That bundling is what makes it work. A single route per neighbourhood cuts delivery cost and emissions, and the imperfect produce is bought at a discount, so the customer pays less and the food is rescued. Since 2018 the company has saved more than 230 million pounds of food that would otherwise have been wasted.
为什么管用
- Discounted supply can support a lower price than grocery stores.
- Scheduled routes let a whole street be served from one trip.
- The 'misfit' framing makes a discount feel like a mission.
- Rescued salmon and mislabeled CPG broaden the assortment cheaply.
可以搬走什么
A cosmetic rejection is a pricing and routing opportunity: sell the 'defect' as a product and solve the last mile by consolidating deliveries rather than competing on convenience.
后来呢
Misfits Market grew fast and acquired fellow rescuer Imperfect Foods, adding first-party distribution to its own third-party vans. It leans on its mission and on data about what people buy in normal stores, which lets it quickly target every new category where there is waste and an unmet need.
