For as long as humans had kept bees, hives were simple containers — woven straw skeps, hollowed logs, plain wooden boxes — with no internal structure to organize the comb bees built inside. Left alone, bees attached their wax comb directly to the hive's walls, ceiling, and any other surface wherever it happened to touch, wherever supported the weight best.

That meant every honey harvest or health inspection required cutting or prying comb loose from the container it was fused to, destroying the comb, disturbing or killing bees in the process, and giving the beekeeper no way to check on a colony's health without doing real damage. Beekeeping was necessarily a destructive, occasional event rather than something a keeper could do routinely without cost.
