Fruehauf's detachable trailer let one horse pull five loads.

August Fruehauf's first semi-trailer let a truck drop a box and hook another, doubling the fleet.

Fruehauf Trailer Company

那一手

In 1914 the Detroit blacksmith August Fruehauf built a simple single-axle trailer for the lumber dealer Frederic Sibley, first to carry a boat on a trip, then to haul lumber behind a modified Ford Model T.

The trailer was detachable, so Sibley's truck could work while a trailer was loaded or unloaded, and the fifth-wheel coupling let one man join and unjoin the box with the truck. Fruehauf called it a 'semi-trailer' and it became the ancestor of the highway trailer.

Business grew into the Fruehauf Trailer Company, which added hydraulic dump trailers and the automatic fifth wheel, and the idea that a tractor and its cargo box are separate spread across trucking.

为什么管用

  • A detachable box means the truck works while the trailer is loaded or unloaded.
  • The fifth wheel lets one driver change trailers, so a tractor serves several boxes
  • Standardising the coupling made trailers interchangeable across fleets
  • One engine unit can haul more volume, so capital stretches further
值了多少Split the load from the tractor聪明

可以搬走什么

Separating the mover from the moving box lets one engine serve many loads, and turns a waiting truck into a working one.

后来呢

Fruehauf grew into a leading trailer maker and the semi-trailer became the standard for road freight, with the box and tractor treated as separate assets that fleets can swap. The company later also produced US shipping containers.
